Weird News/Coffee-fueled Car Shatters World Record

Most people need a few cups of coffee or a couple of shots of espresso to rev their engines in the morning. Now a team of British engineers have taken this concept quite literally. Not only did they develop a car that ran on coffee grounds, but they drove it straight into the Guinness World Records.
Engineer Martin Bacon, along with a group of Teesdale Conservation Volunteers, recently broke a Guinness World Record for vehicles that run on organic waste. The "Coffee Car Mk 2" reached a top speed of 77.5 miles per hour and averaged 66.5 miles per hour.
The previous world record for this category was held by an American team, whose Beaver XR7 ran on wood and topped out at more than 47 miles per hour.
Bacon and his team modified their Rover SD1 with a "gasifier" and filters that convert used coffee grounds into energy. When heated, the grounds create combustion gases carbon dioxide and water vapor. After these gases are then reduced to carbon monoxide and hydrogen, they're run through a cyclone filter and a rock wool filter, cooled by a radiator, and pumped into the engine.
The Coffee Car was developed in cooperation with the BBC One show "Bang Goes the Theory." The car will also be on the show as part of Bang Live, during Manchester's Science Festival, on Oct. 22 and 23.
