The 'See What You Print' (SWYP)Printer

(SWYP) Printer
Our familiarity with printers has simultaneously bred both apathy and contempt. It's always been a cumbersome process: Hook up a machine occupying too much space; poke around its innards installing ink cartridges; then cross our fingers hoping only what we saw on the screen translates to the page -- which is ideally loaded, facing the right way and doesn't jam on its way out. Dissatisfied with the status quo, Seattle-based Artefact Group designers set out to create a slimmer box, one proportionate to a ream of paper, that prints without waste or frustration.
The result of their revolutionary rethinking is the SWYP (See What You Print) printer. Remember how futuristic the tech in AT&T's "You Will" ads looked 20 years ago? It's a similar feeling watching the SWYP video -- except we actually have the technology today to make SWYP happen.
Simply opening the paper tray turns the printer on, bringing you to a personalized start screen of wirelessly networked devices and online sources. To print only what you intend, you can format margins, edit pictures and ditch unwanted printing areas all with the flick of a finger on the 17-inch display. How's your ink supply looking? Select the ink icon and the interface fades, giving you a view inside the machine, augmented with superimposed ink level and inserted paper type information.
Most important, having the 1:1 preview screen continuously calibrated to the printer ensures the color results are consistent and predictable. Come to think of it, wouldn't this peripheral perhaps be better named the PWYS printer? Then again, better questions are when, where and for how much this disruptive concept may eventually come to market.
