Cantata Music Center – World`s Most Expensive USB-based Digital Audio Converter

Cantata Music Center by Resolution Audio is the world’s best and most expensive USB-based Digital Audio Converter.  This audiophile-grade music server costs £5,995 ($9,660).
It can handled wireless or wired USB connections, thanks to an add-on called Pont Neuf, from a variety of different sources, from CDs, to audio files stored on your computer. Audio is output via XLR or RCA outputs. You can basically hook this box to your computer and it can play back your tunes in awesome quality up to 192kHz/24-bit – assuming they were encoded at such a high quality. The front side of the Cantata shows off an impressive dot-matrix LED display, which gives feedback as well.
It is built on the award-winning Opus 21 series and had been refined and enhanced to include computer-based music libraries. Other digital sources such as a DVD player can be played through the external inputs. [Resolution Audio]

Motorola Reveals Droid Razr: 'World's Thinnest Smartphone'

The Motorola Droid Razr, a Google Android powered gadget that the company claims is the world's thinnest smartphone.
Motorola Mobility revived its once best-selling Razr brand to tout its latest gadget, the Droid Razr, as the world's slimmest smartphone.
The company, which has agreed to be bought by Google for $12.5 billion, hopes to compete with arch-rival Apple's iPhone when it kicks off pre-orders at Verizon Wireless on October 27.
But the device, which sports a more powerful chip than the iPhone and a higher-speed wireless connection, costs $299 -- far more than $199 for the latest basic iPhone 4S.
NPD analyst Ross Rubin said that while the phone could put a dent in iPhone sales at Verizon Wireless, it would be unlikely to sell as many as Motorola's previous Razr, which sold more than 130 million units.
Only about 10 percent of U.S. consumers would buy a $300 phone, Rubin said. "That's a relatively small part of the market. At $199, it would be an explosive seller."
Outside of the U.S. market, the device will simply be called Razr. Motorola hopes to rekindle the popularity of its original Razr, which was the thinnest flip phone on the market when it debuted in 2004.
Motorola also introduced MotoActv, a combined music player, performance tracker and GPS device aimed at fitness enthusiasts. This device will start at $249 for an 8 Gigabyte version. A 16 GB model will cost $299, Motorola said.
Motorola uses Google's Android software to power its smartphones. The Droid Razr, sporting Corning glass, will be able to download movies from Netflix and comes with front-facing and back-facing cameras.
The phone, unveiled days after Apple's iPhone 4S hit markets, is the latest iteration of a line-up that helped stage a recovery for Motorola after years of market share losses.
Motorola's Razr was the most successful phone brand in the company's history. The height of its popularity was from late 2004 until late 2006, when the device started to lose its luster amid tough competition and heavy carrier discounts.
That led to years of market share losses as Motorola failed to come up with another hot device to replace Razr, after having focused on the brand for too long.
Motorola started to turn around in late 2009 with the launch of its first Droid phone sold through Verizon Wireless.

Look at the 'World's Smallest Camera'

Hammacher Schlemmer now sells what it claims to be the world's smallest camera for $100. The miniature digicam is small enough to rest on a finger, measuring 1.125 inches long, 1 inch wide and 1.062 inches deep.
It's not a terrible camera for its size, either, with a 2-megapixel sensor that captures 1600-by-1200 resolution photos with auto-focus, or 30 frames per second AVI video in 640-by-480 resolution. A 2 GB microSD card is built in, and there's a USB port for transferring photos to a PC. The built-in rechargeable battery gets 30 minutes of use per charge.
One is actually smaller in volume at 0.934 cubic inches, compared with 1.195 cubic inches for the Hammacher Schlemmer camera.
The Super Small Spy Digital DC DV, available at Brando, also trumps the "World's Smallest Camera" with a volume of 1.102 cubic inches.
Some spy cameras, like the one sold by SpyVille, are even smaller, though they must be attached to an external battery. And if you exit the world of consumer tech, you'll find cameras like the NanEye 2B, which is smaller than a matchstick head and is meant for medical use.
So with all due respect to Hammacher Schlemmer, its claim to the "World's Smallest Camera" doesn't hold up. We'll give it extra points for cuteness, though.

AMD Ships World's First 16-Core Server CPUs, New Fusion Chips

Yesterday what appeared on the surface to be good news for Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) landed.  The company announced [press release] that it was shipping the world's first 16-core server CPUs to retailers and OEMs, with product expected to hit end users sometime in October.

I. Can You Handle 16 Cores of Power?

The new chips use a new 32 nm core design dubbed Bulldozer, which AMD hopes will do the trick in remedying slumping server-side revenue.  While Interlagos technically is a 16-core CPU, the term is a bit confusing as it lacks certain elements you would expect in a full 16-core implementation.

The chip is built on Bulldozer modules, which contain a pair of processing cores.  However, the module only has a single floating point processing unit (FPU) and fetch/decode/execute unit to share between the two processing cores.
This is a bit different from Intel Corp. (INTC), who incorporates a full FPU and fetch/decode/execute unit with every core.  The net result is that performance may not be quite as high as you would expect out of a 16-core chip.

Each chip comes with a quad-channel memory controller.

The new cores will be branded the FX-6200 series.  AMD still hasn't updated their product page to include information on this new lineup, but we expect them to do so shortly.  The new cores are pin-compatible with AMD's Socket G34 (Magny-Cours/Opteron 6100) motherboards.

Information on pricing and clock speeds is still not generally available, nor are comprehensive third-party benchmarks.  However, one can expect a slightly lower clock speed due to the high core count, which would mean strong performance in highly multithreaded apps, but less spectacular performance in primarily serial apps.  Given the target, though -- business users -- this should be an acceptable compromise as most heavy corporate server loading is multi-threaded these days.

AMD says that Interlagos will be compatible with dual- and quad-socket server motherboards, indicating that you may be able to pack up to 64 cores onto a single board.  If that's not enough, AMD's 2012 Terramar platform will include up to 20 cores per die.

Interlagos is expected to see strong pickup among supercomputer makers due to the high core-density per motherboard.  Cray, Inc. (CRAY), a top supercomputer maker, was the first company to receive a shipment of the new chips.
II. Zambezi, Wither Art Thou?

While Interlagos is nearing the market, AMD has grown decidedly quiet about Zambezi, the four, six, and eight core desktop processors that work supposed to launch in Q3 2011.  One problem may be clock speeds.

Given the core count AMD may be able to get away with a lower clocked Interlagos offering, but it will face substantial criticism on the desktop end, if it fails to deliver its promised relatively high clock speeds, which were supposed to be 3.6 GHz (normal), 4.2 GHz (turbo) for the FX-8150 octacore chip.

At this point it’s all rumors, but the critical thing is that Zambezi is nowhere to be found even as Intel's Ivy Bridge platform -- its first to feature its new power-saving 3D transistor design -- races towards a 2012 launch.

III. New Fusion Chips Land

While AMD may be struggling on the high end of the PC market, it's certainly taken the low end by storm with its Fusion CPU+GPU chips.  Alongside the announcement of Interlagos availability, AMD quietly announced the availability of new Fusion Llano series advanced processing unit (APU) designs.

The first chip, the A4-3300 is priced at a sweet $70, includes dual 32 nm Stars (Phenom II architecture) cores clocked at 2.5 GHz and with 2 MB of L2 cache and a 160 unified shader GPU.  The chip draws 65 watts.

The second chip, the A4-3400 comes with an identical GPU, but bumps the clock speed to 2.7 GHz, and the price to $75.  Both chips fully support DDR3 1600 memory.

Given the price, you may see these chips ending up in designs priced as low as $200-$300.  At that price they should experience market traction.  Thus AMD continues to dominate the low to mid-market, while failing to deliver competitive high-end CPU product, on the PC side at least.

While AMD has stated that it intended Llano primarily as a budget desktop chip, the chips are currently available from Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) exclusively in OEM laptop builds.  Discrete offerings for do-it-yourself desktop builds should be available shortly.

Toshiba Portege Z830 Ultrabook Billed as World’s Lightest 13-inch Laptop

The flow of announcements of light and thin Ultrabooks is starting to strengthen after yesterday’s Lenovo’s IdeaPad U300s and today’s introduction from Acer of its Aspire S3.
So, what does the series of Toshiba Portege Z830s announced Thursday offer that these other Ultrabooks don’t? Toshiba claims the Z830 is the lightest 13.3-inch laptop in this class at less than 2.5 pounds.

Toshiba’s Z830 announcement states that the company has shaved about 20% of the weight and 40% of the thickness in the laptops from the Portege R830 Series-- which was already pretty svelte--for the Z830.
While the Portege Z830 has a slim 0.63-inch profile, it lacks the unibody design of the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s and is less of an Apple MacBook-Air clone than other Ultrabooks.
Priced at Under $1000
However, you may find a Portege Z830 more attractive just for its sub-$1,000 starting price, that magical price point Intel sold us on for this new class of ultraportable laptops. Toshiba may have managed that low price by sticking a relatively small 128GB SSD in its Ultrabook.
If you can live with the smaller storage capacity and are looking for the (self-proclaimed) lightest 13-incher available, you can pick up the Portege Z830 starting in November.

Special Gadgets/Bowers & Wilkins PM1 Speakers – Most Refined Small Loudspeaker

Bowers & Wilkins PM1 Speakers – Most Refined Small Loudspeaker
Bowers & Wilkins’ latest bookshelf speakers, the PM1, attempt to tread the middle ground between the more affordable CM5s and high-end 805 Diamond models. Touted as the most refined small speaker yet created, B&W PM1 speakers, features a carbon braced tweeter that extends well into the mid-range frequency at 20 khz that brightens the instruments and voices of performers with great accuracy.
For the true audiophile the company has created speakers with new technological innovations with a carbon base that makes the B&W aluminum domes even more impressive. Sitting below the Carbon Braced Tweeter is what at first appears to be a regular Bowers & Wilkins Kevlar® cone bass/midrange driver, as found on the likes of the well-regarded CM1, and which is renowned for its ability to deliver clarity and detail at mid frequencies.
The PM1’s drive unit features a new Anti-Resonance Plug: a mushroom-shaped device that is a tight fit inside the voice coil former, helping to damp the motion of the former. This reduces cone break-up, for a smoother, more refined sound, again raising the performance of a key Bowers & Wilkins technology to a new level of performance.
These bookshelf speakers are a mere 25-inches tall but weigh 20lbs each and costs $2,800 per pair. The delicious Mocha Gloss finish makes the speaker look the cost of admission alone.

Special Gadgets/Meridian Audio 808.3 Signature Reference CD Player

For the past 25-years, Meridian has been making some of the world’s finest audiophile CD players. It’s been six years since the first 808 CD player was introduced, and with each new model Meridian adds a few improvements to their reference quality players.

The 808.3 is no exception. Like the 808.2 before it, the 808.3 Signature Reference CD Player uses Meridian’s DSP based up-sampling system and triple FIFO buffering. All 808.3s benefit from an array of audio inputs – analogue, digital, and a new balanced digital audio SpeakerLink input – as well as a sophisticated volume control. These inputs allow the connection of additional audio sources, which can be selected and processed using the same powerful audio enhancing DSP as the internal CD source.
Updates to 808.3’s analogue input card provide superior analogue to digital conversion compared to previous models of 808i/808.2i. This improvement in conversion technology enables superior audio performance for all analogue connected sources making 808.3 a better, more valuable pre-amplifier.
In addition to its standard audio inputs, the 808.3 Signature Reference CD Player features an ID40 Sooloos Card allowing it to be directly connected to the same network as a Meridian Sooloos Digital Media System. When connected the 808.3 is seen as a zone within the system and it renders audio streamed across the network.
At the output, Meridian’s SpeakerLink connection system delivers the highest quality digital signals to Meridian’s DSP Loudspeakers on discrete, low-cost cables with simple connectors. The 808.3 Signature Reference CD Player has new twin SpeakerLink outputs which mean left and right DSP Loudspeakers can both be connected directly to the 808.3, further simplifying wiring structure and making cables even easier to hide.
Available in Graphite, Silver and Black, the 808.3 Signature Reference CD Player is priced at $19,995 (including the ID40 Card).
